The village of Ballingarry (recorded as Ballengarry in the newspaper of the day) is in county Tipperary near to the Kilkenny border. On Tuesday 17th March 1846 the village organised a race meeting on grassland a short distance from the village. There was a crowd in excess of 2000 to witness an opening Match followed by a Hack race won by Lieutenant Taylor of the 95th Regiment. Despite the obvious appeal of the meeting, no future meetings were recorded in the village. |
